How I Work With Clients

My approach to the practice of counseling/psychotherapy is best described as Prescriptive Eclecticism. In this way of working, psychological treatments and interventions are customized to meet the specific as well as diverse needs of my clients. The approaches and interventions that are chosen are based on psychological research, my clinical judgment and my clients’ needs and circumstances. While I do tend to work frequently from a cognitive behavioral model to treat clinical disorders such as depression and anxiety (as this approach has been proven highly effective with these issues) I may also conceptualize and customize a client’s treatment plan using another or a number of other psychological approaches including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Person Centered Therapy
  • Solution Focused Therapy
  • Experiential/Emotion Focused Therapy
  • Existential Therapy
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR: for clients presenting with psychological trauma)
  • Prolonged Exposure Therapy (for PTSD)
  • Exposure and Response Prevention (for OCD)
  • Gottman Method Couples Therapy: Level 1 & 2 Training

Within my practice diversity is celebrated. Individuals and couples from a variety of different cultural, ethnic, spiritual, gender expressions and sexual orientations are welcomed.

My Counselling Style

My counselling style is warm, genuine, direct and practical. I frequently use humor within sessions as a way of shifting negative emotional states, challenging clients and/or encouraging new perspectives. I tend to be flexible in the approaches/interventions that I may suggest to help you with your difficulties and actively welcome client feedback if an approach is not effective or helpful. I am also comfortable working with clients who indicate needing an assertive therapist who is able to coach and/or challenge them directly.
